Tonging has been done on the Chesapeake Bay since the early 1700s. It is still a popular, though arduous, process for retrieving oysters from the water. There are very few makers of real (or miniature) oyster tongs today. Real tongs have two wood handles, 12-30’ long, a pivot point and steel tong heads that are usually rusty. Tong heads have teeth, used to dislodge oysters from the reef.
Our Miniature Oyster Tongs are realistic (though non-functional) and they fit our workboats well. Tong handles are 12” long (Ash) and plastic tong head is 2.75” wide, painted brown (rust-like). Overall length of tongs is 13”.
Oyster Baskets (empty or with miniature oysters) are not included with tongs but are available as separate items. Baskets are 1.75” dia. X 1.25” high, with two handles.
